While enroute to the Suffolk County Fire Academy last night for training, Holtsville 7 Truck observed a vehicle driving erratically on the Long Island Expressway near exit 67. Shortly after, the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into the center media support wires. Holtsville 7 truck stopped and observed an unconscious victim still in the vehicle, that was now starting to catch fire. Members quickly acted and split their crew to accomplish both victim removal and fire extinguishment. With no engine on scene yet, members utilized pressurized water cans and dry chemical extinguishers to mitigate the fire. Engine 5 arrived on scene as 7 Truck removed the victim from the vehicle and immediately started administering life saving interventions to the patient. Shortly after, Yaphank Fire Department units started to arrive and continued to provide exceptional patient care and transported the victim to an area hospital. The First Assistant Chief, Second Assistant Chief and Ambulance 17 were also on scene.
